In 2011, I started volunteering for Give Kids The World Village which was founded by Henri Landworth. Mr. Landwirth passed away a couple months ago. He was one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors and his dream was to give children with life threatening illnesses, and their families, the ability to be at a “home-away-from-home.” To give children a moment where they can enjoy their last moments with love, laughter, and family.
When I volunteered at the Star Castle for a few years. On this shift, I got to read stories, color, and play princess dress ups with the children. It brought so much joy to me that I never experienced before.
Each family that visits the village, gets a gold star per child. At the end of their week long stay, the child/dren get to place their star anywhere they want and they take home the placement of where that star is kept.
Needless to stay, there are stars up that date all the way back in the 80-90’s. While I worked there, parents would fly from all over the WORLD to find their child’s star because it’s the best time to remember their child’s last moments.
I’ll never forget the the year I picked up a shift delivering pizza to cottages. I knocked on the cottage door, a man opened it and was immediately in tears. He thanked and blessed me for being able to do what I do and it brought so much joy and love to him and his family that his child was able to enjoy a pizza before he would pass because he only had a month left and NO ONE was there to tell him he couldn’t have that pizza! I cried. I felt sooo honored for doing what I was doing for GKTW.
The families stay in a GKTW cottage at the village. They take part in so many events such as parades, meet & greets, AND an ice cream shop that’s open 24/7 because the goal was that no one can tell a child “NO”.
GKTW also give each family tickets to any Orlando attraction such as Disney!
Mr. Landwirth’s goal was forever live on through GKTW and its volunteers.
Today, I took it upon myself to raise money for The Give Kids The World Village: Challenge For Hope event.
