For the fourth year, I will be participating in Coasting For Kids. I will be going to Kennywood on September 1st to 'marathon' roller coasters all day in support of Give Kids The World, a charity that is near and dear to me.
Give Kids The World offers children with life-threatening illnesses (with the help of Make A Wish) the opportunity to go to their village in Central Florida, near Disney, Universal, and Sea World. Most of these families have unfortunately grown accustomed to a life full of hospital visits and ups and downs. The experience that they have at Give Kids the World changes that, even if for just a week. The wish children are treated like royalty, and all their needs are well attended to because the village is designed with them in mind. They get tickets to visit the theme parks in the area, characters and animals visit, and everything is included. I was fortunate enough to volunteer at Give Kids the World Village in Orlando, Florida last year. It was a humbling experience. I shuttled families around the village, operated rides, served food, and had the wonderful opportunity to interact with these brave children and strong families. Since 1995, every visiting wish child has received a gold star to personalize and place on the ceilings of the Castle of Miracles and Star Tower. The star stays there forever, a glittering symbol of a child’s time at the Village and the light that shines within them. The castle struck me as a beautiful way for these families to remember the time they had at the Village. In a perfect world, GKTW hopes there is no longer a need for their services. But until that day, this charity is doing great work and means so very much to me.
If you decide to donate, any amount is helpful to me and will be greatly appreciated! Please don't forget to check if your comapny matches donations! The link to donate is just below. More than 90% of your donation goes directly to the children, an incredibly high percentage for a charity that also has to manage administrative and fundraising expenses.
